Sorry Sun, but you’re “terminal”

I was talking with a Quest customer late last week about identity management. I started my questions with “What do you have for identity today” to get a level-set on where the customer was. The first comment they made was that they were a Sun identity management shop but they had just received their notice of the “terminal release” of the Sun IAM provisioning suite. Therefore, they were going to review options across-the-board.

It’s truly unfortunate to see this happen but the road is littered with great software companies that had crappy marketing - Banyan comes to mind as another.

So the official word is getting out. What are you hearing?

When Gosling leaves (and says "As to why I left, it's difficult to answer: just about anything I could say that would be accurate and honest would do more harm than good.") it pretty much indicates that software is so dead that even the most prominent Sun personalities don't even matter to Oracle.

Pretty much the same thing. Software is EOL and they are not sure where to go. Lots of customers (and developers) feeling left out by Sun/Oracle... Not thrilled about moving to ANYTHING mostly because of the investment in services and that recent SUN purchasers are in the middle of an amortization/depreciation cycle on current software so there are very limited $$$ for services even in Oracle (or a competitor) gives them the software for free.
